Dom Dom Hamburger Plus (ドムドムハンバーガーPLUS), Ginza, Tokyo, Japan

Dom Dom Hamburger is Japan's first home-grown hamburger chain. Established in 1970, the chain predates the introduction of McDonald’s to Japan and Mos Burger, another famous Japanese chain. [1] As Japan’s oldest hamburger chain, Dom Dom Burger opened a central Tokyo location in Ginza, one of Tokyo’s swankiest neighbourhoods. The Ginza burger restaurant has a ‘Plus’ tag added to its name to differentiate it from the brand’s regular stores. [2]

Dom Dom Hamburger Plus offers premium burgers made with 100 percent Japanese black wagyu beef. The burgers come with various seasonings and add-ons from wasabi and soy sauce, to bacon, egg, cheddar, gorgonzola, mushroom and avocado. There is wine too, which you can order by the glass or bottle. [2]

The high quality of Dom Dom Hamburger Plus' burgers was not the only reason I visited the Ginza location on 12 Jan and 05 Feb 2023. In addition to beef, there are also pork, chicken, and fish burgers, and other items on the menu. Each Dom Dom Hamburger also offers menu items unique to that location (or to a few locations). The reason I visited the Ginza location was to have the fried soft shell crab burger.

Please continue reading the rest of the article to see more photographs and read about my experience eating Dom Dom Hamburger Plus' fried soft shell crab and wagyu beef burgers.

Dom Dom Hamburger Plus Interior, 2023

Dom Dom Hamburger Plus is small, with table and counter seats fitting just 18 people. The interior also does not look like a fast food restaurant, but a suburban American diner, and a super retro one at that with its red-and-white chequered tablecloths. [2] The counter seats are located in the entry hallway to the small dining room, and may not be the best place to sit if the restaurant is busy. I sat at a counter seat for my first weekday visit and at a red-and-white chequered tablecloth table for my second. In both cases the restaurant was not busy and I was the only customer having lunch in the restaurant at certain times.

Soft Shell Crab Burger Signboard, 2023

The deep-fried soft shell crab burger (¥1,390 - less than US$11) is one of the restaurant's best selling items on the menu and after having one, I can see why. The crispy whole crab is stacked with crunchy lettuce, cheese and onion slices, and is served with french fries and pickled ginger, like you get at a sushi restaurant. It is an unusual condiment for a burger, but makes for a great combination. As with all soft shell crab dishes, every part of the crab is consumed.

Black Wagyu Beef Burger, 2023

I ordered a black Wagyu beef burger for my second visit to Dom Dom Hamburger Plus. Since I already tried the soft shell crab burger for my first visit, I wanted to try a Wagyu beef burger, for which the chain is known for. I got the basic burger, without all the extra condiments that can be added, and the burger was ¥1,490 - a little more than US$11. The burger was definitely good and the next time I visit, outside of ordering another soft shell crab burger, I will order a Wagyu beef burger with more of the available add-ons.

The menu is written in Japanese. However, English speaking staff is available to help with your selection. The best strategy is to use your web browser's translate function to view the Japanese menu on the chain's website to determine what to order before coming to the shop. Other available menu items are the Sangen pork loin cutlet burger with curry sauce (¥1,490), the crispy Alaska Pollock fish burger (the fish is twice the size of the bun; ¥1,090), and the sweet and spicy chicken burger (¥1,090). There are also limited-time specials, such as an avocado shrimp cutlet burger.
